I just AdSense on my site and can not find a way to choose the ads that are relevant to my site. What should I do?

I started writing articles online in a number of different sites that allow me to join Google AdSense, which places ads on my articles. I wondered if you write good articles, I could make decent pocket money off this or is it a waste of time? Does anyone do this and get the benefits?
